Defining the Issue:

Our goal is to change the mentality of today’s building professionals towards adopting a Biophilic-centric process, as well as bring awareness to the public through a triple bottom line and regenerative systems approach.  Biophilic Design closes the triple bottom line loop, creating the ability to have regenerative and cyclical processes in our built environment.  It brings life back into our buildings and therefore ourselves. By showing us how we benefit from nature and its inclusion in our buildings, it will drive the cultural shift needed to completely reconstruct our whole approach to the built world we live, work and play in.

History of Biophilic Design and Sustainability:

The use of Biophilic elements in design is in not exactly a new practice, though the design method wasn't coined  until the 1970's, one would most certainly be familiar with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, as even ancient architects  knew the benefit of nature in the built world.

The use of nature in our homes isn't a completely new concept as seen here below, a sun porch with all windows, bringing the garden outside directly into the experience in this room.

Beginning with the World Commission on the Environment and Development in 1984 and the subsequent Earth Summits, world leaders met to discuss and promote change as they began to realize the harmful effects of development and industry .  There was a massive increase in turning raw goods into consumer goods, increased CO2 concentration from automobiles and the manufacturing process, as well as the creation of the GDP.  This tool used to measure the economy and central to how the world operates, ignores environmental degradation and the economic- environmental relationship, leaving the natural world with no voice or means of measurement.  These summits were the beginning of finding holistic solutions to these problems and the practice of sustainable development and building.

Biophilia was first used by Eric Fromm in 1974 and later discussed in depth in E.O Wilson's Book "Biophilia" which was published in 1984.  Biophilic Design evolved out of this theory into a specific practice that endeavors to create a harmonious ecosystem between the earth, people and the built environment; considering all of the systems, economics and industries involved, it is regenerative and cyclical at its core.
