Defining Biophilic Design

Living-Lab-by-DaeWha-Kang-Design-11-889x

The foundation of Biophilic Design is rooted in the concept of Biophilia, a hypothesis which suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connection with nature and life. With strict and complex principals and a holistic approach, Biophilic Design is to be experienced through sight, sound, taste, touch, smell, and movement.  It endeavors to create a lasting and healthy ecosystem involving humans, nature, and the built environment.

Biophilic Design practitioners understand that the future of sustainable and regenerative development lies in fostering the attachment and affection humans have for nature.

Our mission is to explore biophilic design as a sustainable construction approach in the current real estate industry, including corporate, educational, hospitality, and healthcare work environments. A biophilic approach can have significant impact on the environmental, social, and economic factors of regenerative development.

A growing number of scientific studies have linked mental/physical wellbeing and work productivity with a strong connection to the natural world. Humans were once engaged with this philosophy, but over time have normalized the "concrete jungles" that exist today. This increasing separation from nature is reflected in the industry through education, manufacturing, healthcare, urban development/planning, and architecture. For change to occur, the attitude towards treating nature as an obstacle needs to be altered.

We will delve into technology and solutions, including natural light, ventilation, materials, vegetation, views, and natural shapes and forms; all attributes of Biophilic Design that contribute to the mutually beneficial relationship between humans and nature. This ultimately promotes positive interactions between people and the environment which in turn encourage an expanded sense of relationship and responsibility for the human and natural communities.

Our investigation will center around the state of Biophilic Design in the industry today, the challenges in its implementation, and the outlook for the future, including the impact of the current global pandemic.

Our Goal

Instead of focusing on solving human’s individual negative impacts, we need to start to envision ways for humans to enhance sustainable building with the incorporation of biophilia in building and design. Ultimately, we want to challenge designers, technologists, policy-makers, communities, and building and planning professionals to look at their plans for regenerative development and require the inclusion of our biophilic design solutions in to these plans for implementation.
