Environmental - The International WELL Building Institute //

WELL Certification

This initiative focuses on improving the health and wellness of humans impacted by the built environment. The seven key elements that comprise this initiative are air, light, water, nourishment, fitness, comfort, and mind. The overall goals of the program include: implement place based relationships, evolved human-nature relationships, light and space, and environmental features to encourage human interaction with nature which in turn leads to healthier, and happier human beings.

The Desert Rain home is a great example of a building constructed with Biophilic Design and the environment at the heart.  Below are examples of these practices put into action:

  • Light- Natural light was considered a building material;  the roofline was created with the seasons in mind to make best use of the sun

  • Air-Zero Airconditioning, natural smells from the porous materials- such as the concrete and untreated timber; this all contributes to a unique experience inhaling and exhaling these natural smells which also create a unique sense of space and attachment

  • Plants-Incorporated native plants in 8 small biodomes

  • Natural Landscape-Large windows show views of mountains, wildlife, a river and trees

  • Natural Materials-Use of stone, clay plasters and sustainably harvested and reclaimed wood

  • Naturalistic Shapes and Forms-Use of curves, a secret geometry that mimics the local river

  • Biomimcry- The roof mimics the local trees, interior space mimics the forest canopy,
